SNMP Monitor
How to get here
1. From the main menu bar of the WhatsUp Gold Console, select .
2. In the Active Monitor Library dialog box, select , then click .
The Simple Network Management Protocol is the protocol governing network management and monitoring of network devices and their functions. This monitor queries the SNMP device and tries to match the expected returned value.
- . The name of the monitor as it appears in the Active Monitor Library.
- . The description of the monitor as it appears in the Active Monitor Library.
- . Select this option to have the monitor appear in the Active Monitors list during discovery. From there, you can select the monitor to have WhatsUp Gold discover that monitor type on your devices.
- . Click the Browse button; then, locate and select the appropriate SNMP object in the MIB object tree. For more information, see below.
- . Select Constant Value, Range of Values, or Rate of Change in Value.
- . Depending on the Object ID you selected, enter the appropriate value. If the value matches, then the monitor. Select Up or Down.

- (in variable units per second). Enter the desired value. If the value is above the rate, then the monitor is. Select Up or Down.
Selecting an Object in the MIB Tree
In order to select the appropriate object in the MIB tree, you need to be familiar with the MIB names for the SNMP objects you want to monitor. For more information, see RFC 1213.
. Suppose you want to monitor the volume of data going out through your router, you'd select ifOutOctets in the MIB object tree, thus inserting 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16 in the MIB box.
. Suppose you are interested in the operating status value of a port on your router; in this case, you would select ifOperStatus, thus inserting 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.8 in the MIB box.
. Suppose you're interested in the errors on a port on your router; in this case you'd select ifInErrors, thus inserting 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.14 in the MIB box.
