Device Discovery Methods
Select the type of discovery you want WhatsUp Gold to perform on your network.
- Simple Network Management Protocol is the protocol governing network management and monitoring of network devices and their functions. (available in the WhatsUp Gold console). WhatsUp Gold discovers devices by reading SNMP information on your network. This scan type uses an SNMP enabled router to identify the devices in your network and also identifies subnetworks within your network. The Device Discovery wizard displays additional options for scanning with SNMP.
- . WhatsUp Gold scans a range of IP addresses and finds the devices that respond to a message sent via the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP Internet Control Message Protocol sends messages between devices on a network.). The Discover Devices wizard will prompt you to enter a range of the IP addresses in your network.
- (available in the WhatsUp Gold console). Scanning a Network Neighborhood creates a list of devices by scanning the Windows network to which your computer is connected, and finding the other systems on the network.
- (available in the WhatsUp Gold console). WhatsUp Gold imports devices from a host file. (Note that the default file may be empty unless you have specifically added devices to it.)
: For all discovery methods, you can choose to resolve device types using SNMP.
All devices found during these scans will be shown to you before being added to the database. Later in this wizard, you will be able to select the devices you want to monitor from the possible devices found.
